Kill Dil review
'Kill Dil', directed by Shaad Ali, starts promising despite its hackneyed plot. The film stars Ranveer Singh and Dev, and Ali Zafar as Tutu; which are a pair of hardened shooters working for Bhaiyaji, a grizzled don played by Govinda. These murderers trigger-happy joke relentlessly, even as bullets pumped into a terror target, and his hilarious, irreverent, and often crude one-liners that are the best in this movie.
Ali pity these men trapped in a script directly from the 70 Dev Disha, a young fighter, played by Parineeti Chopra, and is instantly smitten meets. Soon, he wants to give up his life of crime and go straight. After a series of failed interviews, even gets a job selling insurance. But predictably, this change of heart test his relationship with Tutu, Bhaiyaji and gets all hot and bothered.
In just over two hours, 'Kill Dil' there slog to get through. But surely begs the question - why make this film today? Like 'Günday ", also produced by Yash Raj Films, this is a throwback to the masala potboilers the past. I can not speak for you but I'm tired of these taxes. In the scene where the Dev interviews for the seller work insurance, the camera lingers on a framed photograph of Nirupa Roy with the word 'boss' as Alok Nath, presumably playing the head of human resources, Dev questions about your qualifications. Lame joke!
There maudlin sentimentality too, in a scene where Dev invited to join Disha poor child and him at his table in a modest dhaaba, and the guy invites another poor girl to join them. The scene is meant to show that Dev is really a soft under that tough exterior, but what it does is make you cringe.
The most enjoyable parts of 'Kill Dil' are humorous, but are in the first half. A scene in which Tutu Dev and head to the library to find out what Disha meant when she responded to joke SMS Dev with a 'LOL' is pure genius. As it is a scene in which the two laborers negotiate the price of a set of bracelets they want to buy a jeweler whom I have bound and gagged by order of Bhaiyaji.
The film will immediately fall back buffer, hurtling towards a hasty, artificial climax and just too convenient. The narrative is punctured by too many songs and good actors are wasted on ingrates roles. Ali Zafar, lovely as always, is horribly miscast, and seems a little embarrassed stuck in this messy film. The abundance of talent Parineeti Chopra makes every effort to infuse some credibility in his role, but it is difficult when you are cast as a drinker, perenially-party rich girl rehabilitating offenders for a career. Honest!
It is a joy to see Govinda in after all these years the screen, and the actor does well as crime-lord witty that matches well with the boys steps when they break into a dance. It has a maniacal laugh murderer too, but can not stop thinking that a more substantial role deserved. Ranveer Singh is, however, that owns the film with his performance as the young thug Livewire. Always ready with a joke, go through life without any filters, which gives an endearing antihero in Dev, who stands despite many flaws of the film.
There is a lot of praise that one can amass in 'Kill Dil' except to say it is not unwatchable movie. The first hour passes quickly, and you even found throughout smile. If that's enough for you, give it a shot. I'm going with two stars of the film, stars and additional media for excellent performance of Ranveer Singh, two and a half out of five of 'Kill Dil' years.
